Megan climbed into the car Trixiâs mother had arranged for them, feeling much better with both feet on the ground. Out the window, New York City bustled with lights, cars, and yellow taxis for miles. The densely populated streets around Central Park in New York made Californiaâs coast seem less congested. This was a world Megan didnât want to live in. She preferred the tranquil life, wishing she was back in Mount Juliet, Tennessee.
They pulled up in front of the high-rise condominium, which she barely remembered. Before the car came to a halt, the porter opened the door with a vibrant smile. âMiss VanPelt, itâs fantastic to see you again. Arenât you lovely? Will you be staying for a while?â
She touched his cheek as if they had known each other forever. âArenât you a treasure, Archie? But weâre just here for a week. Mommy wanted to meet my wife.â
Trixi pushed her forward, proudly displaying her to the world, but Megan only cracked a half-hearted smile, feeling unworthy of the attention. âArchie, this is Megan Stuart. We got married some time ago, but weâre still newlyweds,â Trixi said, caressing Meganâs face, strutting her stuff in front of people who couldnât care less.
âWelcome. Let me get the door for you two. Your mother will be delighted to see you,â said Archie as he reached for the door.
They entered the lobby. Megan couldnât tear her eyes away from the high-ceilinged foyer and the massive glass chandelier. Memories resurfaced as they walked beneath it.
âSweetheart, donât dawdle,â Trixi said, grabbing Meganâs arm. âYou look like a tourist.â
She burst into laughter, shuffling forward with Trixiâs grip on her wrist. âBut I am a tourist.â
âNonsense! Youâre a VanPelt now.â
Inside the elevator, Trixi pressed the button for the penthouse floor. As the door closed, Megan inched forward, extending her arm toward the panel of unlit buttons. Sensing a little déjà vu, Trixi slapped it away. âDonât you dare.â
Megan paused, then leaned toward the buttons again. Once more, Trixi pursed her lips as she whacked Meganâs hand. âNo!â
The pouting girl tried again, tempting her fate at reaching the panel. When Trixi grabbed her hand, Megan spun around like a ninja, and her stealthy slap hit as many of the buttons on the wall as she could, lighting them up like a Christmas tree with a hearty chuckle.
âYou little shit!â Trixi didnât seem upset as she cursed, though her face turned sour when the elevator door opened on a floor that wasnât theirs. With each subsequent opening and closing of the elevator door, Megan side-eyed Trixi, trying not to burst into laughter, her lips pressed together, proud to have irritated her Mistress.
